The Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra has officially named Jack Lovell-Huckle as its new Music Director, with his tenure set to begin in September 2026. He will succeed Michael Lloyd, who steps down after an extraordinary 32 years at the helm, during which he helped shape the orchestra’s artistic identity and reputation.
Lovell-Huckle was chosen following a rigorous two-year international search that attracted 109 applicants, making him only the sixth Music Director in the Orchestra’s 85-year history. Currently Assistant Conductor at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, he recently completed a highly acclaimed tour of China with The Hallé, bringing extensive experience and a fresh artistic vision to the BPO.
Expressing his excitement, Lovell-Huckle said: “I am thrilled and honoured to be chosen as the next Music Director of the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra. From my very first rehearsal, I was struck by the dedication, ambition, and enthusiasm of every member. I am looking forward to building on this rich history, exploring exciting programmes, and creating memorable performances for both local audiences and the Orchestra’s touring venues.”
Michael Lloyd’s final concert will take place in June at Birmingham Town Hall, where he will lead the orchestra in a powerful performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” marking a fitting farewell to his decades of leadership.
The Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra said it looks forward to beginning a new era under Lovell-Huckle, while honouring Lloyd’s enduring legacy and profound contribution to the city’s cultural life.
