UK car production at lowest June level in best part of 7 decades

The amount of vehicles rolling off of UK production lines last month sagged to the lowest June level in nearly 70 years, as manufacturers were lambasted with shortages of both staff and semiconductors.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) mentioned just over 69,000 cars were formed in UK car plants last month, the lowest June total as of 1953, although this precludes June 2020 when factories were getting back up to speed after the initial lockdown.

The global deficit in semiconductor chips as a by-product of the pandemic has slapped car production, and could mean 100,000 fewer cars are crafted in the UK this year than previously projected.
